Top 5 Common Interview Mistakes

How many of you have left a job interview thinking, “I could have done better?” Guess what? You are not alone. Even those with several years of experience make the very same mistakes. How can you avoid them?

Here are Top 5 interview mistakes to consider and avoid:

  1. Being Pessimistic about your current employer

Being negative or cynical about your current employee is one of the most common mistakes candidates make. All organisations experience frustrations and clashes and so a potential employer wants to see if you can manage yourself when such situations arise. In other words, how would you behave if you were part of their team/business? Would you assist others in moving forward or would you be a negative influence?

  1. Lack of confidence

Some of the typical mistakes made by candidates is lack of confidence when responding to questions asked and, bad eye contact. Most roles require you to employ interpersonal skills and so you need to be poised even if you are nervous during your interview. Try deep breathing techniques before your interview.

  1. Coming unprepared to the interview

One of the biggest mistakes candidates make when coming for interviews is failing to prepare adequately. Do not just read a company’s website and presume you know enough about the business. Instead, practice due diligence by extensively researching on the company culture and identifying some of the challenges they are currently facing. Preparing 2-3 questions for the organisation demonstrate that you have done your homework and are keen to bring value to the business which includes finding solutions for some of the challenges faced.

  1. Don’t say ‘we’, say ‘I’

Using the word ‘we’ when explaining projects you were involved in, gives the interviewer the impression that you could potentially be taking credit where it’s not due or you played a small role in the success or completion of those projects. Therefore, it is imperative that you honestly highlight your achievements and the part you played in the successes.

  1. Lack of personality

In the current market, shortlisted individuals are unquestionably fit for the role advertised. However, the differentiating factor is mostly based on personality profile and human connection competences. Subconsciously or consciously, you are being assessed from the moment you enter the building. Build your rapport with everyone that you cross paths with – from the receptionist to the interviewer(s) themselves.
