PHARMACY AWARENESS WEEK

A patient completes consultation with a doctor, walks out of the doctor’s office with a prescription at hand and probably a few medicines already and heads directly to the pharmacy. Medicines are given with instructions, paid for and the patient walks out to head home or back to work. No questions asked. Sound familiar?

Thought so.

Questions are very important especially when it comes to what we consume. In particular, medicines. Learn to question your Pharmacist/Pharmtech. Ask him what the medicines are for. Ask them what will happen if you take them along with the medicines you are already consuming at the moment at home. Ask them whether it can be taken with the ugali and nyama(meat) that you plan to eat once you leave the pharmacy. Ask why you have to take the antibiotics for the period they are telling you to take. Ask what happens if you are not able to complete the dose if you vomit and the tablet/capsule comes out.

Ask Questions. And always take advice before consuming any drugs.

Ultimately, your health is in your hands.
If you have a doubt and your provider has not addressed it, please ask him or her. And if you get any unexpected experiences after taking the medicines, get back to the pharmacy or hospital and make it a point to inform them. Always.
